A stock picker, also known as an order picker is a machine which is somewhat similar to a forklift. It enables the operator to use forks to pick up a pallet. An order picker is also capable of lifting the operator up to higher shelves for picking some objects, and this feature is something the forklift does not provide. Usually, order pickers are operated by electricity. These type of machinery are mainly utilized in a warehouse setting. Most often they are utilized for transporting pallets and doing particular tasks in the shelving and stocking department.
The operator of the oder picker sits up on a platform where they operate the controls. These controls help to direct the machinery backwards, forwards or steer it from side to side. Once the operator has positioned the unit in place the tines could be raised to the required level which makes it very convenient for the operator. Like for instance, if the materials needed, are located on a shelf that the operator cannot reach, then whole platform is capable of being raised up to certain level. Due to the counterweight located at the other end, the unit remains balanced, even at higher levels.
The platform is then lowered back to its original position after the order has been picked. The order picker is then driven or directed to its next location. With most models, it is possible to move the order picker whilst the platform is raised, although, several companies might have policies and procedures in place preventing such maneuvers in the name of safety. An order picker can also put pallets on a shelf. Forklifts and stackers could be used to finish these particular tasks at several companies instead.
