The operator of this kind of forklift normally stands up in a small cockpit. The stand-up design allows the narrow aisle forklift to be as short and narrow as possible. A stand-up cockpit forklift normally has three tires: one in the rear, and two in the front. This configuration allows for fast and easy maneuvering. There are several versions of these forklifts which come with a sit-down cockpit. The lift attachment is capable of pivoting to the sides, permitting the lift to be operated without the operator having to move the entire machine. The sit-down version generally has four wheels.

An electric engine is utilized to power many narrow aisle forklifts. Electric-powered machines do not produce exhaust fumes and are not noisy, making them the preferred choice for closed areas such as retail spaces. Some lifts come with a gas engine or a diesel engine. However, the diesel model is not suggested for indoor use as it can be noisy and produce exhaust.
